Beginner Guide

Essential tips · Daily tasks · Useful techniques

Pokemon Pokopia gives you a lot of freedom to build and explore, but there are a few things worth knowing before you dive in. This guide covers the choices that matter, what you should prioritize early on, and the daily routine that will keep your island running smoothly.

Irreversible Choices

Most things in Pokopia can be changed later, but a few decisions are permanent:

  • Protagonist name — Your character's name cannot be changed once set.
  • Item gifting ("Look at this!") — When you show an item to a Pokemon using the "Look at this!" action, that item is consumed permanently. Be careful with rare items.
  • Items dropped into the abyss — If you drop an item off the edge of a floating island or into a void, it is gone for good.

Things You Can Change

  • Character appearance — Use the Large Mirror furniture item to change your look anytime.
  • Town name — Can be renamed through the settings.
  • Pokemon respawn daily — If a Pokemon leaves or you miss one, it will reappear the next day. No Pokemon is permanently missable (except limited-time event Pokemon).

Early Game Priorities

  1. Check the Habitat Pokedex before building — Before placing items randomly, look at what habitats you can construct. Planning ahead saves materials and time. Use the Habitat Dex to browse requirements.
  2. Get Scyther for Lumber — Lumber is the most commonly needed material. Scyther's Chop specialty makes gathering it trivial. Build a Tree-shaded Tall Grass habitat (4 Tall Grass + 1 Large Tree) as soon as possible.
  3. Get Drifloon for Dream Islands — Drifloon unlocks access to Dream Islands via its Fly specialty, which are a great source of rare materials and bonus Pokemon encounters.
  4. Collect wings for Ho-Oh and Lugia - The legendary bird questline requires collecting special wings throughout the game. Start looking for them early so you are not stuck waiting later. See the Legendary Guide for details.

Useful Techniques

  • Hold Y to bulk collect — Instead of picking up items one at a time, hold the Y button to vacuum up all nearby loose items at once.
  • Place Storage Boxes next to Workbenches — Crafting stations pull directly from adjacent storage. This saves you from constantly moving items in and out of your inventory.
  • Portable Crafting Table — You can pick up and place Workbenches anywhere, so bring one along to remote areas for on-the-spot crafting.
  • Hold ZL for precise placement — When building, hold ZL to enter precise movement mode. This gives you fine-grained control over item positioning, which is essential for building habitats that require exact arrangements.
